Biographical / Historical
The Western School Journal was a publication from Topeka, Kansas beginning likely around 1883-1884. John MacDonald bought the publication in 1890 and served as its editor and publisher until 1916. John MacDonald was an educator and superintendent of schools in Shawnee County from 1877-1881 and 1883-1889. In 1898 MacDonald was president of the Kansas State Teachers Association, and at the time of his death in 1916 he was serving as president of the Educational Press Association of America. The Western School Journal was a periodical containing articles and advertisements related to education, schools, and educators in Kansas - though it also contained news about education from throughout the United States and occaisionally other countries as well.
