Biographical / Historical

The Atheneum Club was a women’s study and civic group that was formed in 1903 and was active until 2008.

In January of 1903, on a day with near-blizzard conditions, a group of about 15 ladies met in the home of Mrs. B. C. Jones. The meeting had been arranged by Mrs. T. A. Scates. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the formation of a formally organized women’s study club to be made of the group gathered. In Dodge City, educational opportunities beyond high school were very limited. These women possessed a desire to exercise their minds and to increase their knowledge of the world around them. Learning was a lifelong endeavor for the ladies of the club.

The club was responsive to the changing needs of the community as the years passed. Many donations of money and time were made to causes deemed worthy. The appears to have stopped meeting in 2008.
