Scope and Contents

This collection contains photographs of Dodge City, primarily focusing on Dodge City's downtown and Front Street areas. The photographs document areas which were demolished for the creation of off-street parking around Third and Fourth Avenue, as well as buildings which were demolished as part of the Urban Renewal program. Many of these photographs also document local businesses of the 1960s, including the Trail Inn Hotel, Lucille's Produce, Ford County Building and Loan Assn., E.A. Brown Manufacturing Co., Bill's Tavern, Bob Johnson Appliances, Paul Warner Appliances, Goddard's Billiards, the Santa Fe Railroad Depot, and various other stores, businesses, and restaurants.

Biographical / Historical

Fredric R. Young is a historian and author of books on the history of Dodge City. Young was born in Dodge City, Kansas in 1931. Young majored in accounting at Kansas University, though he would become interested in history in the 1950s. In 1972, Young published Dodge City: Up Through a Century in Story and Pictures to commemorate Dodge City’s hundredth anniversary. In 2009, Young wrote another book about the history of Dodge City, titled The Delectable Burg: An Irreverent History of Dodge City – 1872 to 1886.
