Biographical / Historical

Angus Snyder was a professional heavyweight boxer who lived in Dodge City, Kansas. Snyder was born in Melita, Manitoba, in Canada on February 7, 1906. Snyder grew up in Winnipeg, Canada and was selected for the Canadian National Olympic Boxing Team in 1924, although financial reasons kept him from participating. In 1925, Snyder won the Amateur Boxing Federation of the Americas Heavyweight Boxing Championship. January 15, 1926 saw Snyder’s debut as a professional boxer in a career that lasted until his final bout in 1932. During that time, Angus Snyder allegedly competed in over 200 professional, amateur, and exhibition fights, including a fight with the former world heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey.

In 1927, Snyder moved to Dodge City, Kansas. Snyder owned the Elk’s Club Gym in Dodge City, and at one point owned a feed and seed store in Dodge City. Snyder also worked as a policeman in Dodge City and Bucklin, and after moving back to Dodge City in World War II, he worked with the Santa Fe Railway until his retirement. On August 30, 1931 Angus Snyder married Edna Tenbrink. Angus Snyder died on December 11, 1982.
