Scope and Contents

Thirteen volumes of Reports of Explorations and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practicable Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean from 1853-1861. These surveys documented a series of three explorations to the Pacifici Coast in search of the best route for a railroad. These surveys documented the plants, animals, and minerals of the land, as well as the various Native American groups they encountered. Some of the books also contain large maps, as well as illustrations.
